Fundraising in Canada (up to 2023)
Updated over a week ago

Please note that in 2023 Canada Charity Partners began operating under the "grant payment" mode listed above. However, if you received support from Canada Charity Partners prior to this, the following article would have applied to you:

Unlike in the U.S. and other countries, Canadian charities are not allowed to support international activities in the form of donations or grants. Rather, Canadian charities wishing to carry out activities abroad must conduct them themselves, under their own direction and control.

For a charity wishing to fundraise from Canada, the only option is to be an agent of a Canadian charity carrying out activities abroad. In other words, to do charitable activities on behalf of the Canadian charity.

IsraelGives makes this possible through a partnership with the Canadian charity Canada Charity Partners. It works as follows:

1. You fill out a project introduction form, describing the activities that your organization performs, how you perform them, and for whom.

2. Canada Charity Partners decides whether it wishes to contract you as an agent, and for what purpose.

3. Canada Charity Partners will lay out in detail what the project is that it wishes you to fulfill, the proposed budget, and the expected outputs per dollar invested.

4. if Canada Charity Partners wishes to conduct an activity similar to what you're conducting today, you'll need to differentiate between what you do on the day-to-day, and what's you'll be doing for the Canadian charity.

For example: If you support autistic kids in general, and Canada Charity Partners wishes to hire you as an agent for supporting 10 autistic children in New York, then you're expected to support 10 children that you would otherwise not be supporting, as they're part of the Canada Charity Partners project.

5. If you're prepared to take on the project, Canada Charity Partners will sign an agency agreement with you and you'll start performing the project.

6. You can actively ask donors to donate towards the project, taking into account that donors are donating to Canada Charity Partners, not to you, and their recommendation is just that.

7. As donations come in, Canada Charity Partners will update you, via your IsraelGives account, of the donations that have been approved and applied towards the project.

8. You then go off and perform the activity.

9. You then submit expense receipts of your expenses towards the project.

10. Canada Charity Partners will refund you those expenses, up to the amount that it's allocated towards the project.
